10 ELECTRIC CROSSOVERS THAT ARE AFFORDABLE

The electric market has grown so much that it is very difficult to keep track of all the new models. Pretty much every maker out there, from Audi to Toyota, has all-electric vehicles in its lineup, including all-electric crossover SUVs. Of course, based on what they are offering, some of them can be very expensive, but there are also quite a few out there that are rather affordable. Take the Kia EV6, for example - one of the best electric SUVs at the moment - that offers a lot despite being quite affordable. But that’s not the only affordable electric crossover, so we’ve compiled a list of 10 of the most affordable electric crossovers you can currently buy. They should be the perfect drive for a small family. Of course, there are options for larger families out there too, but keep in mind for those you must pay big money - Rivian R1S ($78,000) or Tesla Model X ($120,000).

2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV - $27,800

One of the cheapest electric crossovers you can buy at the moment is the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV. It is priced at $27,800, but it also benefits from the same $7,500 Federal Tax Credit. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the Bolt EUV is also perfect for daily driving, although it doesn't benefit from the best interior dimensions. With 39.1 inches of legroom, the rear seats are more appropriate for kids, and the 16.6 cubic feet of storage space is not exactly ideal. However, it can be expanded to 57 cubic feet by putting the seats down. The Bolt EUV is powered by one single motor that delivers a total of 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque and has a range of only 247 miles. However, it benefits from DC fast charging and adds up to 95 miles in 30 minutes.

2023 Hyundai Kona Electric - $33,550

Although you will have to spend a little bit more than you would for the Bolt EUV, the 2023 Hyundai Kona EV is a way better option. With more than 100,000 units sold pretty much instantly after its launch, the electric crossover is one of the best compact crossovers you can buy. It is offered in three trims: SE, SEL, and Limited, with prices ranging from $33,550 to $41,550, but, unfortunately, the Kona EV is not eligible for the tax credit anymore. It is powered by one electric motor that delivers a total of 201 horsepower and gets its juice from a 64.0 kWh battery pack. The Kona EV has a range of 258 miles, which, although not very much, is enough to make the electric crossover a perfect daily drive. The 2023 Kona EV offers a decent interior room, although the rear seats can better accommodate small kids. The cargo room goes up to 45.8 cubic feet with the seats folded.

2023 Mazda MX-30 EV - $34,110

Another very affordable, yet not very practical electric crossover is the Mazda MX-30 EV. Currently, the model is only available in California, but pretty soon it will be discontinued for good. Even if priced from $34,110, the MX-30 is not exactly a very good buy, as it has one of the lowest ranges on the market. But, if you can ignore that low 100-mile range, the MX-30 can be a good drive around the neighborhood. If you venture outside the city, keep in mind the MX-30 needs about 36 minutes to recharge to 80 percent. Under the hood, it gets an e-SKYACTIV electric motor that delivers a total of 143 horsepower, and it needs about 8.7 seconds to run from 0 to 60 mph. As you would expect from a Mazda, both the interior and the exterior look very good, and despite its shortcomings, the guys over at Motor Trend think the "MX-30's ride and handling are really spot-on for an EV of this type."

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 - $38,995

With tough competition in the mid-sized electric crossover segment, the Volkswagen ID.4 is one of the few EVs you can get for a little under $40,000. The ID.4 was unveiled for the first time back in 2021, and it is Volkswagen's first fully electric family vehicle. For the 2023 model year, the ID.4 received an additional Standard trim which puts the crossover's prices in a range from $38,995 to $55,245. It can be had with either one electric motor that delivers a total of 201 horsepower, or two motors with a combined 295 horsepower. Also, customers can choose between either a 62 kWh or an 82 kWh battery pack that will give a range between 209 and 275 miles. The ID.4 also benefits from DC fast-charging capability that will help recharge the battery back to 80 percent in just 36 minutes. Volkswagen's crossover has very compact dimensions, with a length of only 180.5 inches, but despite this, it still offers plenty of interior space and up to 64.2 cubic feet of storage space.

2023 Kia Niro EV - $39,550

Not as good-looking as the EV6, but significantly cheaper, the Kia Niro EV is another great alternative you have in terms of affordable crossovers. It was redesigned in 2021 when it dropped the ugly exterior look and received a more spacious cabin and improved range. For the 2023 model year, the Niro EV comes in just two trims, with prices ranging from $39,550 to $44,550. Both trims come with one electric motor with 201 horsepower and a 64.8 kWh battery pack that ensures a range of 253 miles. The battery needs at least 50 minutes to be recharged to 80 percent, which is not exactly fast, but the Niro is offered with a heat pump and battery warmer, plus regenerative braking that helps in improving range. It offers up to 63.7 cubic feet of cargo space, and boasts a long list of standard features. The Niro EV is a decent drive, but it still has its lows. According to Car And Driver, "the Niro EV's steering feels natural, but the cornering grip is measurably lower than some rivals."

2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 - $41,450

An electric car that you will immediately recognize thanks to its unique exterior look, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is also a relatively affordable crossover. For the 2023 model year, customers get to choose between four different trims, with prices ranging from $41,450 to $56,500. The Ioniq 5 is one of the most reliable cars according to Consumer Reports, and it received an overall four-star rating from NHTSA and the Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS - which makes it a very safe EV for your family. It is offered in both RWD and AWD configuration, with power ranging from 168 to 320 horsepower, and range going from 238 to 315 miles. Despite its compact exterior look, the Ioniq 5 can accommodate up to five passengers and has a cargo room of up to 59.3 cubic feet. It can also tow up to 2,300 pounds, so it is the perfect carrier for a long summer vacation. The cabin is also loaded with lots of cool features, and the cargo room goes up to 56.1 cubic feet with the seats folded down. 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E - $42,995

An electric car that will combine the legacy of a cool name, with the capability of a compact crossover SUV, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is currently one of the most affordable electric crossovers you can buy. The 2023 Mach-E is offered in four trims, with prices ranging from $45,995 to $63,995. Of course, the trim to have is the Mach-E GT, because it will give you the most power, and the best performance figures. However, at over $60,000, the GT is not really affordable. The Mach-E delivers anywhere between 266 and 480 horsepower and has a range of 224–312 miles. It also benefits from fast charging capabilities, which will add up to 59 miles in just 10 minutes or recharge the battery in just 45 minutes. The Mach-E is also a very engaging drive and delivers impressive "off-the-line acceleration and surprisingly fun dynamics around the figure-eight course." It is also a very capable crossover, with a cargo capacity of up to 59.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded and a towing capacity of 3,300 pounds.
