IT’S HARD TO FIND A REASON FOR THE 2023 NISSAN ARMADA’S SPIKE IN POPULARITY

Nissan is a major Japanese automaker, but unlike its rivals in Japan or even other automakers from elsewhere in the world, the company doesn’t have much success in the U.S. Still, the company is alive, and although it may not have a great reputation, some of its sales numbers aren’t that bad. In fact, the Nissan Armada recently saw a significant jump in sales, and it’s not entirely clear why that happened.

Here’s how the Nissan Armada is selling right now

Ford Authority recently published the sales data of various full-size SUVs during the first quarter of 2023. The full-size SUV segment is a small but competitive segment, and currently, it’s dominated by the likes of the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, and Chevy Suburban. In the first three months of the year, each of those four large SUVs sold over 10,000 units and were the only ones to hit that benchmark.

The Tahoe was first, as Chevrolet sold over 27,000 units of the SUV already. That’s a roughly 14% increase from last year. The Yukon, which is almost identical to the Tahoe, was next, with GMC selling nearly 20,000 units. More impressively, though, that’s a 63% increase from 2022. Ford sold over 19,000 Expedition units, representing a staggering 99% increase from last year.

Chevy only moved about 14,000 units of the Suburban. That’s a modest 12% growth from last year. The real surprise from these sales numbers came from the Nissan Armada. Last year, the Japanese automaker sold about 1,600 units of the SUV in the first three months of the year. That made it the second worst-selling full-size SUV. So far, in 2023, it’s sold about 7,300 units of the Armada. That’s a 343% increase from before.

Nissan didn’t make any significant changes with the 2023 Armada

Obviously, in raw numbers, the Nissan Armada’s sales figures aren’t that close to the top contenders in the full-size SUV segment. Still, a 343% increase in sales is not expected. What makes that massive increase in sales more interesting is that the Japanese automaker didn’t make any significant changes to the vehicle for the 2023 model year.

There are two reasons for that. The first was that Nissan refreshed the car for the 2021 model year, which already revamped its looks and tech. The second big reason is that Nissan is preparing for a total redesign for the 2024 model year. As a result, it doesn’t make sense to change too much about the 2023 version. Due to these factors, shoppers are unlikely to buy the Armada because of its 2023 model year’s minor changes.

Possible explanations for this spike in Armada sales

It’s possible that some car shoppers are choosing the Nissan Armada now so that they don’t have to wait and see if the next generation is any good. After all, cars that get redesigned typically have many problems in their first few years. Automakers eventually fix those problems, but that can take some time, and many drivers need a brand-new car now rather than in a few years.

Another possible explanation relates to the supply chain crisis that wrecked so many automakers. Nissan was affected by that crisis, which may have been why Armada sales slumped so much in 2022. The full-size Nissan SUV sold decently in 2021 and 2020, where its sales numbers weren’t too different from its 2023 numbers. As such, it’s possible that Nissan has fixed its supply chain problems, and Armada sales are simply returning to normal.
